Did Israel Leave Egypt—or Did Egypt Leave Israel?

What if leaving Egypt was only the beginning of Israel's transformation?

Joshua Seth Houston's presentation examines the Exodus not only as a movement of people out of Egypt but also as a complex process in the formation of Israelite identity. Drawing on his recent research into Egyptian cultural and religious influence, circumcision, covenant, Moses, and Joshua 5, the presentation asks to what extent the Israelites who left Egypt continued to carry elements of Egyptian culture with them.

The session brings together close analysis of biblical texts with historical, cultural, archaeological, and theological questions surrounding the Exodus tradition and the emergence of national Israel. It is closely connected with Houston's recent research on the relationship between Egypt, the Exodus, circumcision, and the formation of Israelite identity.

This presentation examines the exodus and Pentateuchal traditions as narratives of cultural transformation in which Israel gradually moved from an identity shaped by Egypt. The study investigates how the biblical text portrays this transition through three primary areas of cultural expression: clothing, foodways, and ritual practice. Employing a literary-theological methodology informed by anthropology, cultural memory studies, and theories of identity formation, this presentation reads the biblical narrative against the backdrop of Egyptian cultural life to explore how practices of distinction contribute to Israel's emerging self-understanding. The analysis demonstrates that the acquisition of Egyptian garments, the wilderness generation's repeated longing for Egyptian foods, and the regulation of dietary and ritual practices in the Pentateuch function as markers of cultural differentiation. These elements suggest that the narrative depicts a prolonged process through which Israel negotiated inherited cultural patterns while developing a distinct covenant identity. The study argues that holiness in the Pentateuch is expressed through everyday practices that establish boundaries between Israel and its former cultural environment.

Joshua Seth Houston, PhD, is Professor of Christian Doctrine and Old Testament at McGarvey College of the Bible in the United States. He holds a PhD in Biblical Studies from Faulkner University and has also taught and lectured in Biblical Studies at Faulkner University's V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies.

His research focuses particularly on the Hebrew Bible and Old Testament, the Exodus tradition, the formation of Israelite identity, Egyptian cultural and religious influence on ancient Israel, circumcision and covenant, and the interpretation of difficult biblical texts. His work combines close textual and narrative analysis with historical, cultural, archaeological, and theological questions.

Houston's recent research has given particular attention to the relationship between Egypt and emerging Israelite identity. His book Shedding Egypt, Becoming Israel: A Critical Evaluation of Egyptian Culture and Circumcision on the Formation of National Israel examines how Egyptian cultural and religious practices may have continued to shape the Israelites during the Exodus and explores Joshua 5 and circumcision as part of the transition toward national Israelite identity.

His wider scholarship includes work on Jeremiah, temple imagery, textual and narrative criticism, Zechariah and Pauline baptismal imagery, early Christian interpretation, Christian doctrine, and biblical theology. He is the author of several books and peer-reviewed academic articles.

Houston's recent research investigates the extent to which the Israelites who emerged from Egypt continued to reflect Egyptian cultural and religious practices. His work considers circumcision, covenant, Moses, and Joshua 5 within the broader question of how a population leaving Egypt gradually developed a distinct national Israelite identity.
