Exodus in Paul: Baptism, the Rock, and Eucharistic Typology in 1 Corinthians 10

This paper reads 1 Corinthians 10:1–11 as the most explicit instance of typological exegesis in the Pauline corpus. It first clarifies the terminology of τύπος and ἀντίτυπος and the conditions under which an Old Testament person, object or event may be said to prefigure a higher reality. On this basis it argues that the gifts granted to Israel wilderness generation — the cloud, the sea, the manna and the water from the rock — prefigure Baptism and the Eucharist, while the fall of that generation prefigures the possible loss of the heavenly Canaan by those who presume upon sacramental participation without a corresponding moral life. Verse 4 receives particular attention: the imperfect ἦν and the participle ἀκολουθούσης are read, with the Greek Fathers, as affirming the pre-existence of Christ and His active presence in Israel's history rather than a merely retrospective sense. Typology thus interprets realities, not merely texts.

The proposed conference theme has a direct foundation in Prof. Vasile Mihoc's published New Testament scholarship.

In 1976 he published "Sensul tipic al Vechiului Testament după I Cor. 10, 1–11" (The Typological Meaning of the Old Testament according to 1 Corinthians 10:1–11). The study addresses precisely the typological interpretation of the Old Testament in the Pauline passage that forms the central textual basis of the proposed EHJ presentation.

In 1993 he published "Comuniunea credincioşilor cu Hristos şi întreolaltă prin Sf. Euharistie după I Corinteni 10, 14–22," a study of communion with Christ and Eucharistic theology in 1 Corinthians 10:14–22.

Together, these two strands of his published research provide a particularly strong scholarly context for the proposed conference topic connecting Exodus traditions, baptismal imagery, the rock and Eucharistic typology in 1 Corinthians 10.

Rev. Prof. Dr. Vasile Mihoc is a Romanian Orthodox priest and New Testament scholar, Professor Emeritus of New Testament at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology "Andrei Șaguna," Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu.

His long academic career has centred on New Testament exegesis, Pauline studies, biblical theology, the relationship between the Old and New Testaments, biblical typology, Orthodox biblical hermeneutics, patristic interpretation, ecclesiology and the theological reception of Scripture.

He became titular Professor of New Testament in Sibiu in 1983 and also taught at theological faculties in Cluj-Napoca and Arad. In 2002 he served as an Associate Professor at Crowther Hall College, University of Birmingham.

His international scholarly activity has included participation in major biblical and ecumenical networks and extensive collaboration between Orthodox and Western New Testament scholars.

He currently holds emeritus status at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology "Andrei Șaguna" and also serves as Honorary Cultural Vicar of the Archdiocese of Sibiu.

His international editorial work has included projects published by Cambridge University Press, Mohr Siebeck and T&T Clark/Bloomsbury.

In 2018, the volume Sfânta Scriptură în Biserică și Istorie: Studii în onoarea Pr. Prof. Dr. Vasile Mihoc, edited by Alexandru Ioniță and Daniel Mihoc, was published in his honour.
