And YHWH Said to His Heart — Divine Interiority and the Limit of Judgment in Genesis 6–9

This paper re-reads Genesis 6:5–8:22 in its received literary form through four expressions built around לֵב — the human heart's יֵצֶר מַחְשְׁבֹת in 6:5, YHWH's grief אֶל־לִבּוֹ in 6:6, YHWH's speech אֶל־לִבּוֹ in 8:21, and the renewed diagnosis of the human יֵצֶר לֵב in 8:21. Their distribution creates a lexical and narratological frame around the Flood. The crucial change within that frame occurs in divine intention. The postdiluvian evaluation of the human heart closely echoes the prediluvian one, while the announced response moves from eradication toward the preservation of earthly rhythms and the establishment of covenant. Through semantic analysis, discourse analysis, and close attention to repetition, interior speech, and narrative focalization, the paper examines how the text grants YHWH an interiority that readers can hear at two decisive moments. It proposes that Genesis 8:21 functions as the interpretive hinge of the Flood narrative. Judgment reaches its limit when divine grief becomes an inward commitment to sustain a morally fragile creation. This reading clarifies the relation among divine repentance, human continuity, and covenant while preserving the tensions encoded in נָחַם, עָצַב, יֵצֶר, and לֵב. The study contributes a microphilological account of how repeated Hebrew language organizes theological transformation across Genesis 6–9.

Prof. Dr. habil. Mihai Valentin Vladimirescu is Professor at the Faculty of Letters, University of Craiova, and a doctoral supervisor in Philology within the "Alexandru Piru" Doctoral School.

His principal academic fields include Biblical Studies, biblical translation studies, Biblical Hebrew, cultural anthropology, and philosophy of language. His teaching and research have also included Hebrew, Greek, literary hermeneutics, cultural history and civilization, and related areas of biblical and philological research.

He graduated from the Faculty of Theology at the University of Craiova in 2000. He subsequently pursued postgraduate study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at the Université Catholique de Fribourg, and undertook research and documentation periods in Israel, Greece, Belgium, and Italy, including work at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.

He received his doctorate in Theology in 2004, with research addressing Near Eastern archaeological discoveries and their significance for Old Testament studies.
